Nerdio Announcement Clarification
You may have seen the latest notice from Nerdio about "Nerdio for Azure Sunset" in which
they announced a discontinuation plan of the Nerdio for Azure product. We wanted to clarify a
few things for those that are using it as to what is and isn't happening.
-
Most importantly, Nerdio is not dropping all of their Azure Virtual Desktop solutions.
They have 2 MSP specific products that help with Azure: Nerdio for Azure and
Nerdio
Manager for MSP
.
-
They are not forcing ASAP migrations.
-
Microsoft is sunsetting AVD Classic with an end-of-life of March 2023, so Nerdio
for Azure, which was built on that has no choice but to be sunset as well.
-
As of November 30th, no new accounts and trial signups will be allowed, however existing clients in will be supported until Feb 2023.
Nerdio Manager for MSP Was Released to Support a Few Specific Things
-
Azure Virtual Desktop ARM-based virtual machine provisioning. In
layman's terms, better virtual machine provisioning…quicker, easier to edit,
and allows for greater configurability.
- Flexible Image management (one to one, or one to many).
-
Option to utilize Images from Azure Marketplace or import existing
templates (code for the ability to migrate client's existing VMs or
physical servers into Azure Virtual Desktop environment).
-
Movement away from Azure Virtual Desktop Classic which DOESN'T
support a lot of the newer features such as:
-
Azure AD joined servers. This was a requirement to fully move
away from an internal Active Directory server and if you wanted to
extend Azure AD across your entire M365 tenant.
-
Option to use Azure Files for file storage and FSLogix profiles. Do
away with the need for a file server if your file types allow it. (i.e.
quickbooks still needs a standard SMB file share).
- No Proxy server needed.
-
Ability to have your Nerdio Application hosted in your own Azure through
a PaaS-based WebApp. There is a cost to host (around ~$100 a month) but
since it is multi-tenant, that becomes shared over all your NMM clients.
-
Benefits here are you can have a true white-labled domain and not
reliant on Nerdio's URLS.
- Able to put in FEDramp, US-only, etc regions for compliance.
The tl;dr version of "Why Nerdio Manager for MSP?"
-
Transitioning to NMM allows partners to capitalize on customer
demand for desktop virtualization and remote work solutions while
leveraging modern, cutting-edge Azure and Azure Marketplace
technologies.
-
With NMM, deployments can be done in under an hour, existing
deployments can be connected to in minutes and MSPs can see up to
75% cost savings on compute and storage costs through our patented
auto-scaling technology. Onboarding existing Azure environments or building completely new ones are easy and don't require specific or
deep knowledge of PowerShell or the underlying Azure platform.
-
And as an Azure managed application, installing NMM into an
MSP's Azure tenant lays the foundation for dozens, if not hundreds,
of customers to be onboarded and managed from a single intuitive
management interface.
There IS a migration path from Nerdio for Azure to Nerdio Manager for
MSP. For more information, reach out to your Nerdio technical support
team or let TAG's operations team know and we can connect you.
They will also be adding more turnkey migration solutions in the upcoming
months for a more seamless transition. You can follow Nerdio's roadmap to
the NFA transition here: Nerdio for Azure Sunset – Nerdio Help Center.
Please feel free to reach out to myself or the TAG team here for additional
questions or concerns you have about these upcoming changes or to use us
as a resource to help in the transition.
Thanks!
